Technical SEO: How to Get a Mobile Performance Score of 96

When clients approach us to create content that ranks, one of the first things we do is perform a technical SEO audit.

Technical SEO is the practice of optimizing a website’s infrastructure in order to improve its ranking in search engine results pages (SERPs).

This can involve a wide range of activities, including optimizing the website’s structure and hierarchy, improving the website’s crawlability and indexability, optimizing the website’s loading speed, and more.

The goal is to ensure that search engines can easily understand and index the content on a website, and to provide a good user experience for visitors.

Said another way, if your site is slow and janky, you ain’t gonna ranky.

Recently, we did some technical SEO work for a new Automatic Content retainer client. Here’s what we did.

Site Redesign

They had some weird, old theme installed that honestly looked like it was from 1998.

We installed GeneratePress (pro), GenerateBlocks (free) and completely rebuilt the home page.

We did this to speed up the site and bring it into this decade.

Analytics & Optimization

We set up Google Analytics, Google Search console, and RankMath SEO (Pro).

We did comprehensive keyword research and identified more than a thousand keywords we organized into three categories.

There were a handful of posts on the site but they weren’t even close to optimized so they weren’t getting any organic traffic at all.

But one article – a recipe article – was at least ranked in the SERPs so we optimized it using RankMath and formatted it properly.

The 30-Day Results

The most immediate result was with site speed and Google Core Web Vitals.

The site now passes Core Web Vitals and the Performance Score improved 108.7% going from 46 to 96 on mobile!

We publish one article a week and after the first 4 articles in 30 days, we’re starting to be rewarded with search traffic.

I’m especially proud of that CTR. It means the content is resonating and the titles and meta descriptions are on point.

The client is happy, too!

So, there’s more to ranking your content than just creating awesome content.

You have to make sure your site’s technical SEO components are optimized properly.
